A southern Missouri company is facing a lawsuit after allegations it mishandled more than $200,000 worth of horse semen.
Gwen Glaze of Benton, Arkansas, filed a lawsuit in federal court last week against Animal Clinic and Equine Center, a West Plains business, and its veterinarian Robert Leonard, claiming the company improperly stored semen taken from Glaze's world champion Missouri Fox Trotter horse.
The lawsuit says Glaze's horse, named Southern Jazz, sired eight World Grand Champions, 20 World Champions and 21 Reserve World Champions.
About 10 years ago, the lawsuit says, the Glaze family started obtaining Southern Jazz's semen and shipping it to customers for breeding purposes.
In 2007, the lawsuit says, the Glaze family started storing large amounts of Southern Jazz's frozen semen with the Animal Clinic and Equine Center.
By November 2015, the lawsuit says, the Glaze family was storing 1,620 straws of Southern Jazz's frozen semen at the company, an amount worth more than $200,000.
The lawsuit says frozen semen has no expiration date as long as it is properly maintained in a liquid nitrogen storage tank.
The lawsuit says the Animal Clinic and Equine Center stored Southern Jazz's semen in a storage tank which failed, destroying all of the product.
Glaze is asking for the company to fully compensate her for her damages.
An attempt to reach the Animal Clinic and Equine Center for comment on Wednesday was not successful.
